Scotts Fitzgerald’s works, â€Å"Winter Dreams† and The Great Gatsby the reader cannot help but to notice how alike the characters. From desire starting at a young age for fabulous things to the extravagant women they will never possess, Jay Gatsby and Dexter Green, are modeled right after one another. The women they have an undying love for are also alike. The reader can pick up on the many similarities the minor characters of GG have with the main characters of â€Å"WD. † Dexter Green and Jay Gatsby have much in common. From the start of their young lives they both strove to live in a world full of wonderful things. In â€Å"WD† it makes mention that Dexter â€Å"wanted [the] glittering things† and that also he, â€Å"reached out for the best without knowing why he wanted it. Dexter made the effort â€Å"to be on hand at dances where Judy Jones was likely to appear,† while Gatsby bought his massive mansion so that Daisy’s house would be across the bay. They both grasped on to the dream that one day these women would love them back too. After realizing their dreams of true love were broken both men had nothing left to live for. In GG, Nick says, â€Å"[Gatsby] must have felt he had lost the†¦world, paid a high price for living too long with a single dream. † Dexter mourns the loss of his love, Judy, when he reflects, â€Å"†¦he had†¦ seen her fade away before his eyes. † Although there are differences between the two leading ladies, Judy Jones and Daisy Buchannan, they have vast similarities. Both Judy and Daisy come from money, are beautiful, and are shallow. They captivate men with their outward appearance and never let them go. In Daisy’s early years it was known that â€Å"†¦excited young officers†¦ demanded the privilege of monopolizing her that night. † During the time Judy was stringing Dexter along, there was a â€Å"varying dozen who circulated about her. † As Daisy strung Gatsby along until his death, Judy held on to Dexter. However, Daisy forgot her love interest faster than Judy. Once Gatsby was gone off to war or dead she simply ran away with Tom leaving any memories of Jay behind her. It took Judy years and many engagements to finally settle down. Also, they have certain characteristics that are hard to forget. This includes Daisy’s voice and Judy’s unnatural beauty. The husky, charming voice of Daisy is spoke of in GG as one â€Å"men who cared for her found difficult to forget,† and was used â€Å"only to make people lean toward her. † In â€Å"WD† Judy is referred to as, â€Å"inexpressively lovely and [bringing] no end of misery to a great number of men. Not only were their characteristics unforgettable, but also full of falsity. In GG, Nick speaks how he gets trapped in his cousin’s voice only to be let down when he realizes everything she said was shallow. Nick says, â€Å"†¦her voice compelled me forward breathlessly†¦then the glow faded, each light deserting her with lingering regret†¦. † Dexter at one point in â€Å"WD† says that Judy’s smile was â€Å"radiant, blatantly artificial-convincing. † It’s no mistaking that these two gorgeous social- lites are the modeled after one another. Finally, the similarities among the minor characters of GG and the main characters of â€Å"WD† are easy to spot. Jordan Baker and Judy Jones both play golf and are liars. In GG Nick picks up on Jordan’s pathological lying ways, but says, â€Å"dishonestly in a woman is a thing you never blame too deeply†¦,† and same goes for Judy Jones when she lies to Dexter time after time again, saying she loves him and then turns around and leaves him. Another similarity is that Judy Jones and Tom Buchannan’s love interest, Myrtle Wilson, have â€Å"vitality† about them. In GG Myrtle is illustrated as having, â€Å"vitality about her as if the nerves of her body were continually smoldering. † And at a young age Dexter notices â€Å"vitality [that] is born early in such women† in Judy Jones. The fact that Fitzgerald used the same template for his characters doesn’t take away from either story; at first glance the reader doesn’t even pick up on the similarities. But after discovering how alike the two works are it makes the reader wonder if heartbreak, lies, and loss is all Fitzgerald knew to write about.
